DISTRIBUTION WAREHOUSE HIT BY SEVERE WEATHER |
July 28, 2008 -
Suwanee, Georgia, July 25, 2008 - They say lightning never strikes twice, but don't tell that to employees at Lund International, Inc., a leading manufacturer of automotive accessories. Barely two weeks after a severe storm caused structural and water damage to their 340,000 sq. ft. Suwanee, Georgia distribution warehouse, the facility was struck again with heavy rain and tornado-strength winds. Already weakened by the first storm, major sections of the roof and outer walls collapsed. Additional flooding forced the condemnation of both the warehouse and corporate offices.
Although no manufacturing facilities were affected, the total shutdown of distribution and administrative capabilities foretold severe service disruptions. However, Lund employees rallied to make sure that didn't happen. Given a brief window of time by fire and safety officials to enter the remains of the building, employees groped around their offices in ankle-deep water and pitch black darkness to retrieve computers and important paperwork needed to keep the business running. They set up shop in one of Lund's manufacturing facilities a few miles away, sharing office space with other workers, or setting up workstations on tables in break rooms and hallways.
"We have said we have the best people in the business here at Lund, and a crisis like this helps prove it," said CEO George Scherff. "We lost the use of the distribution center Tuesday night and by Friday we were shipping from our production facility nearby. We have been in daily contact with customers, replenishing orders and scheduling shipments. We want to thank all our customers for their support and cooperation and our employees who again rallied together to serve their customers."
Lund plans to source temporary office and distribution space. Once a complete assessment of damage is completed, decisions will be made regarding additional permanent facilities.
